Herre are some of the most commonly asked questions and their answers:
1. What is Rock Steady Boxing?
Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Classes focus on movement, strength, balance, coordination, agility, voice activation, confidence, and community.
2. Do I need boxing experience?
No. Most members have never boxed before joining. Our coaches will help you learn the movements safely and at your own pace. This is not about fighting another person — it is about fighting back against Parkinson’s.
3. Is Rock Steady Boxing safe for people with Parkinson’s?
Classes are designed with Parkinson’s in mind, but every person’s condition is different. We encourage members to consult their physician before beginning any new exercise program. Our coaches provide guidance and modifications, but members should always work within their own abilities.
4. What happens during a typical class?
A class may include warm-ups, stretching, balance work, strength training, boxing combinations on bags or mitts, footwork, agility drills, core exercises, voice work, and cool-downs. Every class is built to challenge the body and brain in a supportive environment.
5. What fitness level do I need to start?
You do not need to be in great shape to begin. Rock Steady Boxing is built for people at different stages, fitness levels, and movement abilities. The goal is progress, not perfection. Show up, move safely, and build from there.
6. Can caregivers attend class?
Yes. Caregivers, spouses, and family members are welcome and often play an important role in helping members feel supported. Depending on the class and member needs, caregivers may observe, assist, or participate in certain ways as directed by the coaching team.
7. What should I bring to class?
Please bring a water bottle, wear comfortable workout clothes, and dress ready to move. Supportive athletic shoes are strongly recommended. We also encourage members to arrive 10–15 minutes before class so they have time to check in, get settled, and prepare.
8. Do I need my own boxing gloves?
As a part of your starter packages, you'll receive everything you need to get started including boxing gloves and wrist wraps. We keep these in stock in the gym and you're welcome to borrow a pair of gloves for your first class if needed. We do not recommend using gloves more than a year old as the foam breaks down over time. Rock Steady has partnerships for high quality products so you never need to go searching and wondering what quality the product is.
9. How often should I attend?
Consistency matters. Many members benefit from attending multiple times per week to hit the recommendation of 150 minutes of exercise per week, depending on their schedule, energy level, and physician guidance. Our team can help you find a rhythm that supports your goals without overdoing it.
10. Do you offer nutrition support?
Yes. Nutrition can play an important role in energy, strength, digestion, medication timing, and overall quality of life for people with Parkinson’s. As a membership add-on we offer nutrition meetings to help members and caregivers better understand practical food choices that support healthy movement and daily living.
11. Is this a medical or physical therapy program?
No. Rock Steady Boxing is a fitness and wellness program, not a medical treatment, physical therapy program, or substitute for care from your doctor, neurologist, or licensed medical provider. We encourage members to work with their healthcare team and use Rock Steady Boxing as part of a broader wellness plan.
12. How do I get started?
The best first step is to schedule an initial assessment or a consultation with our team. We will learn more about your goals, movement ability, safety considerations, and class fit. From there, we will help you take the next step into class. We can’t wait to welcome you to the Rock Steady community.
